Stripe Gene
I have a female marble right now and i was wondering if i got her a striped mate, would any babies be striped. I wasn't sure if the stripe is a dom/recessive trait or if it was like crested genes.
Also....at how many grams is a female able to breed(i mean safe...not able). I don't have a gram scale right now but ill haveto get 1 soon. John |

From what I understand, the stripe gene is co-dominant, meaning there are two phenotypes of the stripe trait.
1. Heterozygous stripes - These are striped in appearance, but they also carry a non-stripe gene. These animals supposedly have wavy stripes and no stripes on the tail. 2. Homozygous stripes - These are also striped, but they supposedly have more prominant, linear striping and the stripes run the length of the tail. Here's how they work in combination with eachother and with non-striped Gargoyles... - Hetero stripe x Non-Stripe = 50% of the babies should be heterozygous stripes and 50% should be non-striped - Non-stripe x Homozygous stripe = 100% of the offspring will be heterozygous stripes - Hetero stripe x Hetero stripe = 50% heterozygous stripe, 25% non-striped and 25% homozygous stripe offspring - Homozygous stripe x Heterozygous stripe = 50% heterozygous stripes and 50% homozygous stripes - Homozygous stripes x Homozygous stripe = 100% homozygous stripe offspring ------- I don't have time to explain what all of those terms mean, but there is plenty of reading on the net about this subject if you do a search for co-dominant genetics. Many Ball Python websites have sections that explain this stuff too. Last edited by AnthonyCaponetto; 06-13-2005 at 03:09 PM. |

Re: Stripe Gene
Hey Anthony,
I'm very interested in the genetics behind the colors and patterns of gargoyle geckos. And find your post intriguing. However, I'm not quite sure what you mean by your definitions of the two striped phenotypes. Could you explain more fully what you mean, for example, some pictures I've seen of striped geckos have multiple stripes, some wavy and extending onto the tail, others straight and ending at the base of the tail. Could also possibly post example pictures of what would be a homozygous stripe versus what would be a heterozygous stripe? Thanks! -Eric |

Re: Stripe Gene
P.S. to Ritts message (we've been discussing this for days):
For those who breed gargoyles, have you looked at the morph percentages that you get? Can you confirm/deny these gene hypotheses? Is there any effort to gather together a lot of such breeding data and look at any possible genetics? Always curious, Nick |

Re: Stripe Gene
The result I have for years now with my orange striped male towards my normal blotched female is 100% striped, with one being orange and one being normal of color.
cheers, Renie |

Re: Stripe Gene
![]() this is what we get everytime from a male striped and a female marbled. it pretty much backs up what anthony was saying. they all have that pronounced stripe right down the middle, but the sides and tail stripes kind of break up. hmm pic wont load, i hope its just delayed ..why cant i right click and copy the ubb code so i can paste it to a link? i swear thats how i posted a pic last time have we changed? anyway its the newest (as of now) pic uploaded, its called striped gargoyle.
