Authorities: Man tied lizards to chest at airport
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Federal officials say they arrested a man who strapped 15 live lizards to his chest to get through customs at Los Angeles International Airport.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Friday that 40-year-old Michael Plank of Lomita, Calif., was returning from Australia when U.S. Customs agents found two geckos, two monitor lizards and 11 skinks - another type of lizard - fastened to his body Tuesday. Plank has been released on $10,000 bond and will be arraigned in federal court on Dec. 21. Authorities say the lizards' value totals more than $8,500. All Australian reptiles are strictly regulated and Plank did not have a permit for them. |

Re: Authorities: Man tied lizards to chest at airport
The real good question is how many times he has done this and gotten through or his associates have been able to.

Wow, that is going to make some waves. Mike works for DragonHerp (Sig International) Used to be Big Game Reptiles. He has been around the Gecko world for a long time and is well known. I have even been to the Hamm Show in Germany with him and legally brought back geckos....

That's really too bad Allen. It's always unfortunate when someone starts out good and goes that way.

I like the figure "$8500". Aren't those skinks worth over 8k each?

Re: Authorities: Man tied lizards to chest at airport
Yeah those look like the red E. depressa, which I've seen for crazy prices on Kingsnake. I'm assuming the two geckos are N.w.wheeleri?

Re: Authorities: Man tied lizards to chest at airport
Man oh Man.... that is no good
why would you assume wheeleri? I would think someone would smuggle something of much more value then N. wheeleri into the US.... some rare species of saltuarius or phyllurus or something

Re: Authorities: Man tied lizards to chest at airport
I think he means Nephrurus Wheeleri Wheeleri which is not available in the states that I know of. The wheeleri we have are N. W. Cinctus. There is a pic on line of the animals looks like 11 depressa, 2 wheeleri, and 2 pilbara rock monitors.
