Re: What Country are you In?
well 5 years later and I've finally taken some geckos across the border... And yeah I totally did declare them as pets. Figured it would be better to get all my paperwork in order since I crossed at Port Huron and it's a few hours of driving to the border so would suck to get turned away.
Called the Fish and Wildlife services at the border and I had to let them know what date I was going to cross and with how many geckos and what kind. The fish and wildlife lady working at the border sent me a link to fill out an electronic decleration that seems to be mainly for commercial importers, but she said I should fill it out anyways and she printed it out stamped it and sent me back a copy in my email so I was good to go with authorized paperwork before I even got to the border. this is the link: Https://edecs.fws.gov/ You have to create an account first in order to fill out an "eDec" but it's all free and not too complicated. If you are trying to actually import or export large quantities it would be considered commercial and there are charts on the website explaining fees for that. Seems like it would be too expensive to really make it worth while to sell cross border... does anyone do this yet? In any case if anyone is considering taking any reptiles across the border, your best bet is to contact your local fish and wildlife services office or the one at your border crossing of choice... don't call the general 1-800 number on the website, cause you'll get some random CSR and seldom do they know much... If you can't find a good contact, call an officer at your border crossing and they will send you in the right direction.. you can search for border crossing info here: U.S. Customs and Border Protection - Contacts I do have 5 Canadian gecko friends here now at my boyfriends house in Indianapolis, IN and I'm stoked it worked out so well driving them down here. I know their ancestors came from New Caledonia, and I hatched these buddies in Canada years ago (except one which I bought from David Sheridan in Hamilton) :P but sometimes I wonder where their great, great, great, great, great, great, great ... grandparents are from and who originally imported and bred them....
