So, I have two little cresties housed separately. About two days ago I move them to a bigger boxes. Little one, now three months old, is living in 8 gal. sized plastic box and the older (four months) is living in 14 gallon old aquarium.
So, the problem is that the younger crestie has started to act passivly. It does eat like it used to eat in it's smaller box. But it's become like lazy, it doesn't move when I try to get it to my hand to move it. The older crestie has become more lively. They are like opposites. Younger is having it's shedding time right now. Could this lazyness be influence of that? Temperature is about 71 F and humidity is 85-90% at nights and 65-70% at days. I feed ten crickets every other day and every other I give babyfood. I powder crickets with calsium and vitamin every time I feed them. |

I feel bad for you and understand your concern.
It sounds like the temp and humidity are good. You said it's eating OK? I think I read you right. I'll assume you rinsed out the new box good before using- no chance of toxin? Sounds like you've got the calcium/vitamines covered. Perhaps it's just due to an adjustment. Did you use the same "furniture"? I've found that mine bounce back from change easier if I continue to use some of their old stuff in each enclosure change- like a favorite baby blanket or something. I would suggest a vet, but for the most part, from my experience and those posted here, even when it's something staring them right in the face, they usually don't know how to help with cresteds, much less for something vague like this. I hope this just clears up for you. I know I haven't offered much here, but I know what it's like to be concerned and eagerly await any feedback I can get. At first glance it doesn't appear there are any red flags with your care. Good luck!! |

sounds like its a little too cold. you should offer a cool side of low 70s, and a warm side of low 80s. most reptiles wont eat if its too cold. if youre keeping it in a plastic tub, get some heat tape attached to a dimmer and use that.
its alot easier to maintain heat and for an animal to find food in a smaller enclosure. you can always try to put it back in its old cage. when any animal isnt eating and is acting lathargic the first question that should always come to mind is "is it too cold" thats usually the problem and easily fixed, not to mentian alot cheaper then a vet visit. and animals need 2 different temps offered on different sides, so they can move around and self regulate to what they need.

It is eating properly, so too cold can't be the problem.
I have heard, that 80F can be dangerous to cresteds?!? I also have heard and read that these geckos wont need any kind of warming if the temps are about 70. I think that I will move it to the old box. Maybe it was too young for that bigger box. |

85+ can be dangerous to cresteds. New Calendonia gets into the low 80s during the warm season, I find that my animals, and all reptiles, do better with a basking. since you know, they are cold blooded. and i didnt say keep the whole enclosure in the low 80s all the time, i said offer a basking, which is one small section of the enclosure, with the other temps being in the low 70s. so the animal can move around the cage. and self regulate. to the warm side, to the cool side, and they see fit, to maintain their body temp as they see fit.

Moving back to old enclosure may be a good idea since that seems to be the only recent change/variable.
A little more heat probably wouldn't hurt- mine seem happiest at about 73-74 degrees. Good luck. |
