Thinking about a sara..

So I have one crested and one garg but feel that is not enough lol. I started looking around on this forum to see if there was something else that would catch my eye. The saras did and I am very interested in them but have a few questions that I'm hoping experienced sarasinorum owners can answer.

1) Why does there seem to be a lack of people interested in these wonderful looking creatures?

2) I saw a thread posted by a Grete_J and his one sara looked extremely "green" and was wondering if this color is normal with saras bc I fell in love with the pics and would want one just like it sometime in the future. (I put green in quotations bc I do not know if there is a big dispute about the color green with saras as there are with cresteds)

3) Lastly, as for you sara owners that own many other herps, how do you like the saras amongst the rest of your collection...meaning do you like saras the most or indifferent and why

Re: Thinking about a sara..

1) They aren't as prolific as crested of gargoyles and don't demand the same price that chahoua do. The general lack of variation combined with low reproductive rate is usually enough to dissuade breeders. That being said, they likely have a lot of unknown potential.

2) Green really is not in their color palette. You can find some "blonde" morphs that are kind of a pale yellow, but that's as close as you'll get. It's a little on the rare side but some people are working with them.

3) It's hard to describe why they are so likable when they're described as flighty. I think they are more observant/aware than other similar species. I sold mine off and really missed them so I went looking for another pair. Just very cool geckos.

A buddy of mine has a spare one he's selling of you go down that route.

Re: Thinking about a sara..

I have only had my 2 "girls" (I believe they are female but one is ~28g and the other is about 15g and I don't think there are pores). I personally love the way they look and mine tend to be more curious; unless trying to get them out of their hide when you wake them up in the middle of the day. They eat more then my cresties of similar wts. Can be flighty. But mine are getting more used to me and hard to get them back in their tanks because they want to go explore.

I don't think I'll ever let them go and would love a WC one day.

Amy, safe to say your 28g is female. Mine were late bloomers and dropped bulges at 21g. 15g sara still has time. I definitely agree with you that they are more curious and eat a lot more.

Re: Thinking about a sara..

I like feeding them crickets, they see the bag and just slide out of hiding and chase the crickets down. I like them more that other geckos just because of their activity. Mine will move during the day or night as supposed to my gargs that are lumps all day and only fire up and move at night. I looked up the 'green' picture and it was just a camera issue, more likely to be a light brown sarasin

Thank you for clearing up the confusion I had with the pictures because it sure looked green to me lol.

Thank you for all the information and giving me a heads up about your buddy, I will definitely let you know if I do go down that route.

P.S. Thanks to all I did not personally thank and appreciate your input equally as much!

Re: Thinking about a sara..

Don't think, just get. I'm currently looking for another sara to add to my two. My white collar, acquired at around 4 grams, was... gecko on speed. I couldn't hold her outside of her enclosure because she was that flighty. I still haven't handled her more than maybe twice a month, but she's calmed down to the point where I'm not worried she'll go flying out of my hand.

Lukas my male, I lucked out on. I've accidentally fallen asleep for about an hour with him at the foot of my bed, to find him still sitting there when I wake up. IME (not much), they calm down considerably with age. When he's not fired up, he is more of an olive-brown, maybe that's where you see the green?

They are by far my favourite of the Correlophus/Rhac family, super inquisitive, active and handleable

Thanks I'm inclinded to agree; but Sasha my oldest/ biggest I thought I saw a few pores several grams ago but not a full set; but then magically diappeared the next weighing about 2-3 weeks later. So hoping she doesn't decide to drop a set this late. Now her younger sibling has never shown any questionably pores; so hoping she is still a she. But only time will tell.
