Question Feed cresteds Vitalina yoghurt?

I hear that some people occasionally feed yoghurt to their crested geckos.
I understand that it can be a good treat for them as it is full of calcium, but I am not sure which yoghurt.
Everyone tells me that I can feed them any yoghurt, as long as there is NO fat in it, 0 % fat.
Ok, but I still wanted to make this thread to b absolutely sure about this.
I like to eat Vitalinea yoghurt with peach flavour. It says it has 0% fat, which makes me think or believe it would be ok for the geckos too, but
I want your opinions about it. No idea if the lack of fat is enough to be ok, or if the other ingredients can be harmful as well...

Ingredients:

Fat free yoghurt made of skimmed milk, skimmed milk concentrate, skimmed wilk powder, yoghurt cultures, peach 10 %, stabilisers (modified maize starch, pectin and carrageenan),
Mineral (calcium citrate), acidity regulators (citric acid, lactic acid, sodium citrate), flavouring, sweeteners (aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame K), colour anhancers (paprika extract,
beta-carotene), vitamin D, contains a source of phenylalanine, contains milk, and contains naturally occurring sugars.

I just want to be sure not to feed anything harmful to my beloved animals
Better to ask the experts first, right. Thanks!

Re: Feed cresteds Vitalina yoghurt?

It all sounds ok to me except the sweeteners (aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame K), I know they're harmful to dogs and cats, so I wouldn't feed it to my geckos. Maybe just a plain unflavored yogurt with fresh fruit mixed in?

Re: Feed cresteds Vitalina yoghurt?

Yes that's what I was thinking too...
I guess I rather don't feed any yoghurt at all.
The one says to make sure there is no fat in it, the other says all the other ingredients can be harmful etc... That's why I asked here.

Guess I will stick to CGD, crickets and mashed fresh fruit after all...

Better safe than sorry, I always say! Maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in, I'm pretty new to the Rhac world, so perhaps I'm overly cautious. But you certainly can't go wrong with the CGD, crickets and fruit!

Re: Feed cresteds Vitalina yoghurt?

In my opinion I think it would be unwise to feed any type of dairy product to a gecko. I do not believe that they produce the milk- digesting enzyme lactase. Most mammals cannot drink milk after they grow up because they lose the ability to produce this enzyme; humans are a rare exception, and not all humans retain this ability. Since geckos, or any other reptile, have never been exposed to any sort of dairy product, I would have to say that they are most likely lacking lactase. In which case, your gecko may have a bought of diarrhea and/ or vomiting after ingesting the yogurt. This could result in severe dehydration if prolonged. I would play it safe and not feed yogurt to your gecko. I think a nice cricket, roach, or meal worm would be a better treat, properly gut-loaded/ Ca++ dusted of course

Re: Feed cresteds Vitalina yoghurt?

If your all out of CGD, have no bugs, no fruit, no money/won't be able to buy CGD, bugs, or fruit, and you have yogurt in the fridge I might say its ok but honestly is that ever going to happen? If you want to get more calcium in them then syringe rescue cal or get them some bugs that are caked in ICB or some other calcium supplement. Snails are good too.

Re: Feed cresteds Vitalina yoghurt?

Yogurt is fermented, so it is easier to digest than milk; that's why they eat them in the middle east. I don't see why you can't give your cresty a little... I know some people who give yogurt to their iguanas for better digestion, to add natural probiotic to their gut. But the Crested Gecko Diet already has enough calcium and other nutrients that they need and so is Calcium Plus, so you don't need to give them yogurt.

Re: Feed cresteds Vitalina yoghurt?

Yes true. See, This is why I wanted more opinions about this
Some friends who are breeders for some time now occasionally feed yoghurt, that's why I asked not to blindly follow those few. Their geckos are still alive of course, so maybe it depends which yoghurt, but I am not going to examine all the kinds at all or something.

I will stick (lol, stick) to CGD, mashed fruit and crickets indeed

Thanks all anyway for the replies!

Re: Feed cresteds Vitalina yoghurt?

CGD also has natural probiotic, which aid in digestion, just like the yogurt.

Re: Feed cresteds Vitalina yoghurt?

I give my cresteds yogurt, its actually in there food bowls right now. I just mix in some CGD, Reptivite and another vitamin by Zoo Med with D3 and they seem to be fine with it.
