Tank size?

I plan on getting 1.2 o2 1.2 of one of the following:
Henkeli, Guntheri, Fimbriatus, and/or Sikorae

I do realize that it KIND OF dependson what species, as to what size tank, but do your best. what would be better:
TANK #1: 48"H x 14"L x 18"D
OR
TANK #2: 36"H x 18"L x 18"D
Please just answer to the best of your ability, and I DO realize this is somewhat of a LOOSE question that will get different oppinions.

ALSO-It is important to know that I will be using the tank year round for my female, and just adjusting the temp/humidity to stimulate "cooling" and breeding times. Dont know if this is relevant, but I just wanted to state it, just in case it is.
Thank you!

Re: Tank size?

Larger is better for all Uroplatus and probably most reptiles so long as you can maintain the proper requirements of food, lighting, humidity, and temperature. If I could, I'd turn a entire room into Madagascar but thats just not feasible at the moment.

That being said, tank #1.

Re: Tank size?

Both tanks are between 50 and 52 gallons, so you could really go either way if you'd like.

Bigger is definitely much better with the Uroplatus, especially the larger species. A 50 gallon tank is going to look fairly small if you plan to put 3 fimbriatus in there, and even the henkeli get to be a pretty good size. Sikorae would do well in that size and so would the guentheri.

Re: Tank size?

That size would work for the sikorae or guentheri only, it would be too small for the henks or fimbriatus, IMO.

But there's more to the tank than just the overall gallon size, proportion is just as important. One thing I've learned that is important about Uroplatus is that you need to not only have height, but width is important as well. I'd prefer to have a shorter height tank than a narrow one. If you can get 36" height and 24x24 for the width, henks would be fine. Even a pair of fimbs might be alright for a while in that, but 14-18" isn't much room to move other than vertical for an animal that is 12" long. Hopefully you get the idea.

This is what I'd recommend if I had my choice...
Ideally, for a fimb pair- 24x24x48
for henkeli- 24x24x36

Sikorae, about 20x20x32
guentheri, I've never kept but would imagine the same as for sikorae.

Whatever size and species you end up with, Uroplatus will use every inch of whatever you keep them in .

Re: Tank size?

I did not intend to use the word "ideally". It makes it sound like those sizes are perfect, but what I should have said was that while you can of course keep an animal alive in a smaller enclosure, IMO the dimensions I've given are the minimum overall size and proportions Uroplatus should be kept in.

Haha, not at the moment...made me laugh. If it ever does become feasible I demand many albums to be posted on this forum!
