open wound?

Ok so my Gecko escaped and went on a little adventure around the house and when we found him he had an open would on the inside palm of his front hand. his elbow to his hand is swollen and the elbow area looks quite red. I'm going to take him to the vet tomorrow I just want to know how to clean the cut out for him right now?

Re: open wound?

Theres a few options depending on what you have at home.

Use a wet Q-tip.

Use a Q-tip that has some neosporin on it that is not the pain relief kind.

You could also use betadine on a Q-tip aswell if you have that.

Or lastly you could use a 2% chlorohexidine solution on a Q-tip.

Yeah

That must be the good option for an open wound

Re: open wound?

Yes....I agree with all of what has been said. me, I have had geckos escape and treated wounds (even a very bad one where my cat got to the gecko!), and always used a q-tip to apply neosporin after cleaning it out with Hydro-peroxide.
The day after, I give the injured gecko a "sauna" and usually they shed thier skin. Don't know why...they just do.....and then the healing starts.
I would reccomend light handling and CLOSE observation after injury.

Hydrogen peroxide is nasty stuff for any wound. It destroys infection and bacteria but it also destroys the surrounding tissues and blood cells. I'd stick to the diluted chlorohexidine solution which is much safer and used by most vets.
