My Darts Eat Fish Flakes
I keep a couple of these awesome little guys in a 30 corner tank that is part water. This is my only "natural" setup in my house, and it's therapeutic to gaze into it... Anyways, there are a ton of guppies breeding in there right now and when I drop fish flakes in there for them the darts come over and snap them up off the surface of the water. I can't imagine this is bad for them, but if anyone could think of a reason why it is, please let me know.

Gorgeous tincs you have there, Joe. I didn't know you kept them. Let's get a pic of that tank, it looks awesome. Perhaps the darts think the floating bits are insects on the surface?

Re: My Darts Eat Fish Flakes
I bred 8 species of dart frogs and have seen many of them eating fish flakes. Most of my enclosures had water sections so the males could drop off the tadpoles which stayed in there until they morphed. Whenever I fed the tadpoles, the parents noticed the flakes. I can't even begin to think of how many adult frogs had a few 'flakey' meals.
Frogs apparently have a simple concept of life: If it comes from above - it's a predator -- DUCK and HIDE. If it is smaller than you and moves - it's food, eat it. (That's where the flakes floating in water come in). If it's on the same level and same size as you -- it's a mate - do your thing.

Re: My Darts Eat Fish Flakes
fish food is made of ground up parts of fish mixed with proteins and other stuff. i think it would probably be good for them, just dont think it has much calcium though. if you look at the labels, some fish food is like 50%protein (i feed my crickets fish flakes mixed with calcium powder. and then back and forth to another mix of a flukers cricket food with more calcium powder added to that with a couple other things

Re: My Darts Eat Fish Flakes
Thanks a lot for the kind words, guys!
Hey Peter, thanks buddy! I keep thinkin about your klemmeri female and I'm really hoping she drops some fertiles for you... you deserve a good clutch. Nick, Thanks a lot too! Here's another pic of the tank - shot through the glass though: ![]() Before anyone gives me a hard time about mixing species, keep in mind that this is my ONLY enclosure where I do this. There are a few eastern newts in there and also the tincts (Can you find all 5 in the pic?) and the guppies. All my other setups are single animals or male/female pairs of the same species, and they aren't "natural" setups like this. |

Re: My Darts Eat Fish Flakes
Thanks Mike! I appreciate that man. They've been in there together for months and there doesn't seem to be problems yet. We'll see. It's nice to have at least one cool looking setup - you know? Thanks again for the compliments on the tank. I'll try to get a wider shot.

Re: My Darts Eat Fish Flakes
I too break the rules. I have Golden, Marbled and a white spot gecko with about six different species of frogs and two anoles. It is about a 180 gal tank 24x24x72. Not quite ready to suggest it, but can't be too bad, my Goldens have cluthed two times this year.
Thanks Jason |

Re: My Darts Eat Fish Flakes
I realize this post is very old. But I have to add to the compliments on your setup! It looks very nice and natural. Seeing it excites me all the more to someday have one as well, as I plan on having some dart frogs at the least.
Also, it's interesting that you keep newts in there with them, because I've been wanting to ask around and find out if people have successfully kept darts with any certain species of geckos or not as well. |
