Lineatus necropsy

We noticed on 9-6-12 that our female lineatus appeared to be stuck behind a bit of wood. When we got her out she was dead!
My daughter who is a Lecturer in exotics, decided to open her up, as she had been fine 2 days before - even eating two snails (which she loved) and had shown no health issues at all.
We think it may have been a large egg ?

Re: Lineatus necropsy

Sorry to see this Julie It sucks when it happens for no apparent reason. Maybe it really did have to do with the eggs...who knows?

We saw the same thing when our female lineatus died a couple years ago...she had gone downhill pretty badly over the course of a couple of weeks, but inside I found some large undeveloped eggs and some that had just started to form. I'm not sure what killed her in the end either, but it was definitely interesting to see.

Thanks Kyle, the funny thing was our female was acting normally eating/shedding etc right before this. We have recently managed to get another adult female, and hopefully in the future we will manage to breed them.

Re: Lineatus necropsy

Is it normal for a gecko to be developing multiple (more then 2) eggs at once? I guess I always assumed that they would lay one set before developing the next.

Yes, it is normal. What isn't normal, in this case, is that the gecko looks like it was egg-bound.

Re: Lineatus necropsy

Thanks for taking the time to show all the detailed pics. I have gone so far as to cut eggs out of rare specimens that I basically watched expire and had good success hatching good looking eggs. My original Red Australian Frilled Dragon female died in labor (1990) and I hatched out eight eggs that I removed right as she expired due to egg binding.... Death sucks, but if you can save eggs, it goes on for the bloodline at least.
