general garg questions

I know I could search and probably find answers to all my questions, but I figure hey, the people on here are great they'll answer

so here goes ( I don't have any gargs but am thinkin about getting one and want to ask a few questions)

1) what are the different morphs ( striped and reticulated, but whats the difference) and colors possible?
2) I've heard the care is pretty much the same as crestie, is that true?
3) can they be housed together or only alone?
4) I've heard males are rare, is this true?
5) what should I look for when I pick one? (signs of health, any common problems)
6) what diseases are they prone to? (entamoeba)
7) does repashy sell a ggd? or is it another manufactureer (sp?)?
8) do they only come from one island or are there island specific morphs like with the leachies?
9) what kinds of sounds do they make?

well thanks for putting up with my questions, oh and someone convince me of getting one, I need 3 good reasons,I do have a ton of cresties and probly shouldn't get into another breed, but I love the lil horns, thats why we have a jacksons cham thanks again

Striped has stripes running from the head to the tail; this morph usually costs more.
Reticulated has more of a marble look to it.

Not sure if one is dominant over the other. I have a stripe x retic pairing this year and am awaiting the hatchlings. I cannot explain why the stripes cost more than the retics, but I have more retics in my collection solely because I prefer them.

Colors are mostly the grays and blacks, but there are some nice orange and red blotches. Very few of them have solid color.

Yes. Slightly larger tank. They are more bottom dwelling than the crestie though, and they grow slightly larger.

Alone because they are far more aggressive than cresties. Hatchlings are cannibalistic and tails are fair game all around. Females have been known to eat the male's tail as well. And well, two males together is a bad idea point blank.

Yes and no. There has been some talk about the possibility of them being TSD. Because of this males need to be incubated at a higher temperature, but they also are at a greater risk of being over heated. Whether or not this is true is beyond me. There are people out there who have come to this conclusion with much bigger collections than I who say it is. I personally don't believe it myself. That being said, the reason that males are rare is because people think they are rare (kind of like adult female cresties). You can find adult male gargs, but you're going to pay through the nose for them. You're better off getting a hatchling/unsexed and raising it up.

Make sure it's alert and visibly looks healthy. These geckos aren't as flighty as cresties and are more prone to just chill. However, the young ones are just as jumpy in my experience. If something doesn't look right walk away

I'm not sure if entamoeba are prevalent in gargs or not to be honest. I have only heard about it in cresties, but that may be because there are more people working with cresties. If you do a search in the disease and disorder forum you may find whether or not other rhacs can get it.

Repashy did sell GGD; however, I believe it was discontinued when he made the 2 part diet. I may be horribly wrong about that though. Contact your supplier and see if they have any left. I know I have used it, but I had better luck with the CGD. The only difference was that GGD had more protein in it.

They may come from many different islands but we do not distinguish them by island (like we do not distinguish cresties)

Mine make your usual chirping sound. Nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to rhacs.

Hope this helps.

Re: general garg questions

As far as the GGD goes, our garg hated it. Right now we are using it up on our hatchlings, but in order to get them to eat it, we have to add 10% nectar. They will do just fine on regular CGD, and ours now out eats most of our cresteds.

Ours also has no interest in roaches or crickets, which I think is interesting because the breeder we got her from fed CGD everyday and dusted crix once a week.

Mine just started eating crickets 3 weeks ago. Try again when it gets a little older

Re: general garg questions

Actually they tend to ignore the smaller crickets, feed it a slightly larger cricket, then there shouldn't be any issues.

Re: general garg questions

Another thing not mentioned is Gargoyles will spend most of their time in the open, unlike cresteds which hide all day. Each of my Gargoyle tanks has a bamboo stick mounted across the middle near the top and most of them spend all day sitting on the bamboo stick. So just make sure they have some nice sturdy branches or perches of some sort to rest on.
