Phelsuma lineata bombetokensis...

Here are some crappy pics of 2 of my females...

These pics simply don't do them any justice.
I have a 1.3 colony (separated) any one of the females is gravid. Can't wait for eggs.

Sweet. How do you incubate the eggs?--haven't found much info out there.

Re: Phelsuma lineata bombetokensis...

There is great info - two books you should have:

1)Day Geckos in Captivity by Christenson and Christenson - basically continues where Sean McKeown (out of print General Care of Maintenance of Day Geckos) left off and more!

2)Day Geckos Professional Breeder Series by Henkel and Schmidt. Also has some "day-type" geckos like Spaerodactylus.

3) My gecko book when it comes out. It is general but has good stuff regarding care of Phelsuma, also uses Sean's species definitions. No-one could quite put it like Sean, so I used my own general care info and used his species accounts. I think it came out really nice!

I incubate Phelsuma eggs in an incubator with ambient humidity above 50%, just sit them in deli cups with airholes, nothing special!

Re: Phelsuma lineata bombetokensis...

In the 3rd picture down, there appears to be two large bumps in front of each leg, what are those? is that just how there body is or do they serve a specific purpose?

Those are very nice looking Phelsuma, Phelsuma have always interested me but I have not yet acquired any. I am considering maybe trying a pair of Giant Day's this summer, unless any of you would recommend another?

Those bumps are the famous "calcium sacs" - common in captivity in both male and female. Many folks are under the impression that just females develop these. These sacs are not an indicator of calcium absorbtion - I have had females with big sacs develop hypocalcemia. BTW proper supplementation for Phelsuma is 2:1 RepCal Ultrafine Calcium with D3 to Herptivite. Also a dish of the RepCal Calcium with D3 should be left in with females. They will take what they need. I also throw in eggshells from just hatched eggs! Many females will gobble these up. You may never see eggs from a female who is calcium-deprived, she will lay them and turn around and eat them!

BTW P. m. grandis (Giant Days) are excellent beginner Phelsuma. In my new book I have recommendations for beginner - advanced. Christensons also make recommendations in their book. I'll be sure and post when my book is published.

Re: Phelsuma lineata bombetokensis...

Just out of curiosity, if I were to take an empty container and dump a container of RepCal or Miner-All with D3 in it and a container of Herptivite and then mix them together and dust with the combination would that be sufficient? or should they be kept seperate and mixed 2:1? is it 2:1 by weight or can you just eyeball it?

Re: Phelsuma lineata bombetokensis...

Mike, first DO NOT mix the different products (Minerall and RepCal). We do not know what will happen! As far as measuring... if you are good at estimating, eyeballing sounds ok...I use measuring cups and make a large spice-jar full. I like spice jars because they have the grated tops, keeps you from spilling it all out accidentally! I make around a month's supply at a time. They should be kept separate for long-term...I had Erik Orrup, the owner of RepCal and Herptivite, explain to me one time why they could not be kept separately...has been a long time and I have forgotten the specifics. Some sort of interaction that mucks up things!
