Re: Florida considers python law
It sucks, but something within reason has to be done.I lived in south Florida for a year and a half and the non-native stuff that is thriving down there is insane. I've caught oscars instead of bass, knight anoles, basilisks, green iguanas, spiny tail iguanas, you name it it's out there. Some dont seem to affect the native wildlife while others are taking a huge toll. Why? because people are irresponsible! Then there are folks like us that love our animals and would do anything to give them the best care possible and others who have decided they are disposable. There has to be some sort of legal repercussion so that these people understand the scale of the responsibility they are taking and what will happen to them if the animal is found released.
A one time fee for Mandatory micro chipping and registration may help and stiff penalties for non-compliance is one thought. Some compromise has to be made to keep our native herps safe too.Gopher Tortoises are getting upper repiratory infections from non-native african tortoises that have been released that can be fatal to the populations.Hopefully there will be something that can be done to keep everyone happy.
