Well boys and girls my herp room is nearly complete and I've lined up my first new residents. I'm getting 3.2 cal kings. A black & white stripe male, a reverse stripe male, a hieroglyphic female and a pair of brown and cream stripe hatchlings. The older ones are being hibernated right now and I should get them in late Febuary/ealy March weather permitting. After I get them established I'm going to set up 6 Coleonyx colonies, 2 brevis, 2 variegatus and 2 bogerti. I've got enough room to set up 2 abbotii colonies if I can find some. Mark

Good luck with building up your collection! I need C. brevis and C. bogerti, let me know if you find any! I didn't see C. elegans on your list, I work with those. :)

What do the C. elegans sell for, they look like a neat gecko.

I was selling them for $75 for a hatchling-- have not sold any for quite some time, don't know the going price for one these days. I think the WC were going for at least that much, probably more, the last time someone brought some in the USA.

What is their care like? I'd be interested in branching out into something new one of these days, my entire collection is Rhac's right now.

They are definitely the most sensitive of the Coleonyx...if you have C. mitratus down they are not hard. The key thing for both these species is moisture, especially for hatchings. They must be on a substrate rich in it. Otherwise, food is the same as for other larger Coleonyx, three week old crickets in adults is a good staple. They relish waxworms as well. :)

Interesting, thanks for the info. What are more of the beginner Coleonyx? I have kept Rhac's for about 2.5 years now and numerous other reptiles most of my life so I am not worried at all about my ability to care for them properly, but naturally I don't want to jump right into the most difficult to care for :D

Hi Mike, I would recommend the C. variegatus spp., there are a few, whatever you can obtain. C. brevis is pretty easy also, hard to find tho.

Hey Julie, I'm sticking with critters that can withstand being with out heat if I lose electrical power. After the big wind storm we had up here a couple weeks ago I'm going to wait on anything that can't take short drops into the 40's. We only lost power for about 6 hours but my neighbors across the street lost it for a week. My plan is to install a generater first for the house and then for the herp room. Mark

Mark, that is a good idea to stick to the Coleonyx north of the border then. :) I have some great heat packs in case you get in a jam, you can have them for my cost if you like. Always good to have those around.

Thanks for the offer Julie. I've got a case of heat packs that I picked up before I moved up here. They came in handy last year when a friend of mine up here lost eletricity for a day and a half. His girlfriend (now ex) started to complain because the geckos where warmer than she was. Which is why she's an ex now. Mark

Stupid question. Do brevis males fight?

Stupid question. Do brevis males fight?

I have not tried to tempt them....I imagine they would!

They will fight. I've seen more than a few mangled males because someone thought that because they were so small they could get away with more than one male in a large community set-up. Mark

They had pores so I thought they might.

Mark, glad to see you're starting to get some more animals! I enjoy having you around the forum, you seem to have some helpful insight into matters that a lot of people don't have much experience with sometimes. Welcome back!
