U. Pietschmanni Pair

Picked up this LTC pair about a week ago and finally took pics of them today. I kinda wanted them to get settled in a bit before we disturbed them. The pair was first put together last April and the female produced one good egg for the previous owner. I have seen alot of interest in breeding from the male and have my fingers crossed.

I'm hopeing to be able to provide a full video of them mateing in night shot at some point. I've had the video camera on them all night since I purchased them.

Large calcium sacs on this girl, this is a good sign that female Uros are cycling.

Awesome! They look great! I hope you have success with them...I'd like to see a lot more of these in the trade someday. I'm still on the lookout for a female...doubt that's gonna happen without buying a pair. :rolleyes:

Yeah, people really dont want to part their pairs they have. Also the few people who are producing CB animals are just keeping the females if they reach maturity. I finally decided to just take the hit and get a pair. On the plus side if they do produce any CB females I can always breed them to my CB male pietschmanni from a seperate bloodline. Chances are next year I may try to purchase another pair, establishing firm seperate bloodlines with the pietschmanni is probably the hardest of all the "mainstream" Uros just because of availability and cost.

Right...that's what I've been seeing also. I think that a lot of Uroplatus keepers are holding back a lot of what they produce, regardless of gender, to establish their own colonies. Unless they are having extremely great success, I don't think most people are putting their stuff up for sale.

I'd love to get more pietschmanni an try my hand at producing them, but I can't justify dropping $800-$1000 on a pair of them right now. :o

Definitely one of my all time favorite geckos. I don't think many, if any are producing many of this species. I've kept them since they became available and may have been the first breeder in North America, but I still haven'r really figured them out. Easy to keep, sometimes they lay eggs, sometimes the eggs hatch. Now and then an animal produces well, but usually only for year or two. If anyone's had repeated success, I'd love to hear about it.

The male is very interested in the female but so far no eggs. She is still very fat and healthy with large calcium sacs. He has tried several times to mount her and has also bit at her a few times. I'm not sure when their breeding season is and what temps/humidity/light cycles/moon cycles trigger it.

It's great to see you on here Neil...been a long time. ;) I'm one of many people that would love to hear your experiences with the genus. If you have the chance, let us know what you are all working with and maybe some pointers if you have them.

We still only have the lone male pietschmanni (:()...hoping to get him a mate and if that doesn't happen we hope to pass him on to someone that is working with them and having success.

I had a group of 1.3 of these guys.
Kept them all together for the season and they produced a total of 8 fertile eggs. In July, I lost the male, and over the next three weeks I lost all of the females as well. I ended up finding several baby spiders in the enclosure, which I believe caused the animals to die, something all Uro keepers should be on the lookout for.

They did very well for me, and it was by far the most difficult losses I have endured in my collection. They were my absolute favorite specie and I am hoping for the chance to work with them again very soon.
Right now, I am hoping that I get a couple of hatchlings out of the eggs that they laid and hopefully find mates for the babies.

Hi Kyle,

I hope you can find a mate for your pietschmanni, we need more of these around! I'm working with all of the Uro species that are readily available and a few that are not. Unfortunately I don't yet have enough of most of the rarer species to be able to offer them to the public just yet. I haven't been that good at keeping up on forums, too many animals to look after : ) I'll try to check in here as well as GU now and then.
